Iippos entry is fantastic. But I can help but wonder...is it "battle-y" enough? Its definitly underwater and its goregeous. I don't think I have seen anything quite like it. Hmmm.
2006-08-20 [iippo]: It's like an underwater dogfight, y'know, WWI-style. The other one's shooting bubble-bullets (what? It works in pokemon!) at the other one. My other option was jousting underwater style, with two seahorses, but I couldn't fit them in platemail :P
2006-08-20 [Evilmonk]: Lol. I'm not trying to be a downer. And I am not a judge so my opinion is just that, an opinion. So for my critique, I would say first, that its an awesome, imaginitive piece. Having not yet seen your competition, I would say, it just doesn't scream 'battle', to me. I am not saying 'do another one' not by any means. I am just offering a little perspective, and I sincerely hope I am not out of line in doing so. If I am say the word and I will delete my comments. I just wanted to say this is an awesome piece that still has the possibility of not making the cut because it just feels a little 'blurred' no pun intended.
2006-08-20 [iippo]: Ah, sorry, I thought you were asking why it's a battle. And I know what you mean, this round is really hard(er). And as I'm so dead allergic to clichés, it was even more of a challenge. "Two seamonsters fighting? No, it's been done... Two mermaids fighting? No, done! Graah!" So I went for something subtler.

2006-08-21 [Duredhel]: Uhm... dunno about Evil's entry :S I mean the concept is great, don't get me wrong. But there seems to be a lack of different tonal values, like in iippo's, where ye can see a whole plethora of different shading methods. Maybe Evil's supposed to be high contrast.. but even for that there's not enough.. uhm.. contrast. But then again its just humble opinion XD, Perplexity kicked my ass in the first round so I'm not too cocky :P. Concepts do go a long way :)
2006-08-21 [Evilmonk]: All true. My ink sorely lacks in the contrast department, but I am also choosing to keep it clean for future coloring. I don't want to do with my inks the same exact thing that iippo (while awesome) did with hers. It would not be very original and while I think that technique will work great for her, I am sure it would come out horrible until I had a lot of practice on it. I am extremely comfortable with the concept I had for it and felt I took the catagory a little further than I needed to by doing a group instead of one person. Either way it goes I am happy with it, and if it should lose I can accept it and move on. To much else to do than hold grudges about little badges and egotistical victories. =) Do your worst Cia_Mar!

My wife likes to color or wants to color everything I do, lately, which is fine by me. Regardless, I am proud of it. I have my own style, and if it isn't enough to win the round I may have to re-think that style. Up to judges really.

I just have got so many things working right now that I am having difficulty keeping up. I'd like to win, sure, but I dunno, I just have a lot of stuff to try and keep up with at the moment. A couple contests that I WANT to do some art for, the crow novel I'm scripting and illustrating, the Sept. Happy Hero, and a couple comissions for a D&D thing, and the badges for the winners of this contest. So a break anywhere would be cool. I'm not giving up...I'm just ready to accept the way things fall into place. I was hoping the humor and closeness to subject, and doing a group pose instead of just one, would earn some pointswith the judges, where my pen technique is just not that solid yet. Oh well. I gave it my best and if it doesn't pan out I at least know where I need to work in my art. I won't be heartbroken. lol

2006-08-22 [Evilmonk]: Hopefully the same judges will stay put for all the tourneys. We have a panel that doesn't think that way. They all are art lovers but they also know that each round brings about changes. So for them the first round is forgotten. We have gone to good lengths to try and pick judges that aren't partial to any one thing or style of art. All of them artisans, in their own right, we picked 5 because of the different styles, mediums they do art in, and level of skill. I think we have a good lot and I feel the only influence on their decisions will come from the artists. They have all been advised to watch for ingenuity, creativity, imagination, technique, and presentation. They have been advised to look for the art that is furthest from what they initally thought when they heard the catagory. That is to say: who gave them what they didn't expect. When someone says something like razed city, we all get an initial image in our head that doesn't require much thought, but who is the artist who didn't go with that initial image? Who thought long on their subject and presented something the judges didn't expect but makes perfect sense in the catagory. My WWII medic. I was going to do a standard superhero thing, but thought about real heros. And that came to be. Lego city. Another example, did anyone think of that?! No one besides plex, and her careful consideration of the subject got it done.
The judges are told to reagrd these things, and they are very impartial. =D
2006-08-22 [Perplexity]: Channy - I used .003 and .005 Microns, and a .001 Copic pen. What about you? What'd you use for those large black areas? I think Evil used a Faber Castel brush pen for his large black areas. They are really nice. I kinda played with them a little bit, but didn't use them in my pic unfortunately.
